Experimental and bioinformatic approaches are used to investigate the genetic basis of evolutionary change over a phylogenetic scale. Experimental approaches address issues such as the origin of genes, and the evolution of developmental mechanisms or physiological traits. Theoretical approaches use statistical and bioinformatic methods to study evolution at the genomic scale.
